Collingwood wears its warehouse history on its sleeve — literally, in the converted rag-trade buildings that now hold studios, breweries and some of the suburb's best share houses. Smith Street (a Time Out world's-coolest-street alumnus) runs the border with Fitzroy: Vietnamese institutions next to natural wine bars next to Stomping Ground's brewery hall. Collingwood Yards has turned the old TAFE into an arts precinct, which tells you who lives here: artists, designers, people with a bike and a studio key. Victoria Park — the football ground turned community oval — is the locals' picnic spot. Rooms here are close-quarters and character-rich.
